Dressage Championships Return To Gladstone, NJ in 2017


After a 2-year break, the National Dressage Championships will return once again to the historic US Equestrian Team facility in Gladstone, NJ in 2017. In a stroke of good fortune, the show will also coincide with the 100th anniversary of the USET’s hallowed grounds. Both riders and organizers are excited to bring a world-class-level dressage show back to this venue.

The 2017 Championships will include classes for Grand Prix, Intermediare, and the Brentina Cup – a class for young riders competing at the FEI level. They will be held from May 18-21, 2017, allowing participating riders to travel to Europe for competitions in the summer months following the Championships. All other national championship classes will be held at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in August.

While the same Championship venue is usually scheduled for three years in a row, Gladstone has not yet been finalized as the location for the show in 2018 and 2019. However, the USET Foundation hopes to be able to hold the National Dressage Championships for several years to come, in addition to 2017’s show.

World Equestrian Games Return To the USA In 2018


The World Equestrian games are undoubtedly the pinnacle of the sport. Held every four years in between Olympic cycles, the WEG hosts world championship competitions for each of the eight FEI disciplines: show jumping, dressage, eventing, vaulting, driving, reining, endurance, and para-equestrian. Similar to the Olympics, the venue also changes with each Games. For 2018, the WEG will be held in Tryon, NC at the brand-new Tryon International Equestrian Center, site of this year’s American Eventing Championships.

Organizers, riders, and fans of equestrian sport alike are thrilled that the WEG has come back to the USA! The venue at Tryon is state-of-the-art, and will doubtless provide a wonderful experience for both competitors and spectators. The 1,600 acre site holds 1,200 permanent stalls for equine competitors, 12 arenas, a cross country course, miles of trails, and seating, dining, and shopping for thousands of spectators. Tryon is a world-class facility, and ideal for hosting the world-class WEG competition.

Team USA Wins Olympic Dressage Bronze


Dressage is a sport normally dominated by European teams, but today in Rio the United States has won its first team medal in the sport since 2004. Sitting perilously close to the medals behind the Dutch team, American rider Laura Graves and her horse Verdades had to put in a near-perfect test to clinch the bronze. The duo pulled it off with a phenomenal score of 80.364, securing the USA’s third place standing in the Team Dressage competition.

Teammates Steffen Peters, Allison Brock, and Kasey Perry-Glass will stand with Graves on the podium to receive their medals in a ceremony that is sure to be an especially sweet reward for Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover, who helped the USA win their last Olympic medal in dressage in 2004.

Chester County’s Own Phillip Dutton Wins Eventing Bronze

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio are well underway, and the Equestrian competition began this week with Eventing. This three-phase competition includes tests in dressage, cross-country jumping, and stadium jumping, requiring horses and riders to be versatile, obedient, athletic, and quick-thinking.

Phillip Dutton, a Chester County, PA resident, put in a lovely dressage test on his mount Mighty Nice, putting him near the top of the leaderboard after the first day of competition going into cross-country. The course was a daunting one, with complicated combinations that caused two other American riders – Clark Montgomery and Lauren Kieffer – to retire and have a fall, respectively. Phillip and Mighty Nice, however, completed a clear round with just a few time penalties, narrowly avoiding a jump penalty at a skinny obstacle thanks to Phillip’s skillful riding.

Mighty Nice and Phillip completed the show jumping portion of the event with just one rail down, leaving them with a score of 51.8, and earning them the individual bronze medal in eventing. This would be Dutton’s very first Olympic medal as an American citizen, with Rio being his sixth Olympic Games.
